19th January – Happy Most Miserable Day of the Year

Happy Most Miserable Day of the Year!* For the past two weeks, we have been warned that today, 19th of January is officially the most miserable day of the year. I awoke to a New York style rain storm. Now you may be saying, but Becky – London and rain – not an odd thing – but ah faithful reader, you would be speaking only a dieter’s portion of the truth. London rain has nothing on New York rain. New York precipitation works itself with more than a little attitude. During a New York rain storm, you will not just feel that your pruney-self will never again know what it means to be dry and snug, you may in fact be forced to flee from a runaway Washington Square Arch, loosed from its foundation by torrents not seen since Noah’s time, or the previous Thursday**.

Anyway – I am a big fan of weather cooperating with prevailing mood, so I thought it should be congratulated for being such a sport on this, the most miserable day of the year.

*I can get behind – a Most Miserable Day of the Year – but where are the festivities? If this were the US, Hallmark would be selling commiseration cards and florists would have stockpiled black roses – but this is much more of a DIY country – and boy did my fellow Londoners do their best to spread the misery on this morning’s commute. Bravo I say. Keep it up.

Also – as this country is so very pro-fancy dress parties (everyday can be halloween), we should be celebrating with Lemony Snicket events.  Dress as your favourite character from The Series of Unfortunate Events.  Toast with firey drinks and serve only spiceless cerviche (without popcorn) and peppermints.

*If you’re lucky enough to work on a high floor of a skyscraper however, you can take the unique opportunity to play office shipwreck. Move away from your desk, lift your feet off the floor and let your wheely chair keel you to and fro around your floor. If the winds are whipping right and proper, you should add some sort of stick and ball element for the popular variant – office shipwreck hockey.
